It's not that ARC hates transit. After all, people using transit instead of private cars means better air, and cyclists are well positioned to benefit from that. But that doesn't mean that we volunteer to be killed, injured or even just harassed by TTC drivers. Of course, such things rarely happen. But they do, and the TTC needs to hear about them.
How it works
1. Making the complaint
You can make a complaint or commendation by telephone (393-3030). However, ARC recommends that you write a letter for two reasons. First of all, it is more official, and you get to control the contents of your statement. Second, if you call you may be put on hold and forced to listen to EZ Rock. Write to:
TTC, Customer Services
1900 Yonge St.
Toronto ON
M4S 1Z2
See the sample letter for a suggested format.
2. The driver gets grilled
A superintendant will interview the "operator" (which is what they call a driver) about your complaint. The operator is allowed to have a union representative at the interview. The interview goes on permanent file. The Customer Services representative will call or write you and tell you the result of the interview. They are allowed to discuss the interview with you, but are not allowed to discuss any disciplinary decision taken by the TTC. Disciplinary actions can range from a reprimand to suspension or even firing. Whatever action is taken remains confidential to the employee file. This seems like a bummer, but it is to protect the employee's privacy.
3. Still mad?
If you are not satisfied with the response you receive you can tell the Customer Service person, and they will advise you about taking the complaint further. This means probably writing another letter, probably just an explanation that you are not happy yet. This letter goes to the executive, and is a kind of appeal process.
Why should you call about a good TTC driver?
Because if you can't say anything nice ... no, that's not it! There is actually a good reason to talk about the good stuff. ARC has heard stories about TTC drivers who have stood up for cyclists in some pretty bad situations, and we think that their boss should hear about it too. After all, we want the ones who understand about cycling to get rewarded ... maybe even promoted. To make a commendation about a TTC employee a telephone call should be fine. Call Customer Service at 393-3030. You will need to have the time and date of the event you are describing, plus the vehicle ID number so that the "operator" can be identified.
