ARChive: Diary of ARC Happenings Toronto cyclists standing together. legal defence, direct action, lobbying, education |
On Tuesday morning, direct action group Advocacy for Respect for Cyclists (ARC) will be taking their concerns about TTC fare hikes to the street. The action will feature a giant asthma medication inhaler who will collect tolls from drivers at Bloor and Yonge, adjacent to one of Torontošs busiest transit stations.
With the loss of provincial funding, the TTC is in tight financial straits. Rather than challenge the province or increase municipal funding, Mayor Mel Lastman would prefer to impose a $0.10 fare hike. According to TTC manager David Gunn, such an increase would result in 4,000,000 fewer riders each year - most of whom will just get into cars. All Toronto residents will pay the price of provincial downloading: more noise, more traffic, more car exhaust and as a result, more cardiac and respiratory illness.
ARC has a different solution: a FAIR hike for the most heavily subsidized transit in the city - privately owned cars. A share of provincial fuel taxes or a toll on limited access highways in Toronto's jurisdiction would meet the TTC's financial needs. On Tuesday morning, ARC will show the city just how easy it is to implement a $0.10 toll on cars at Bloor and Yonge.
Proceeds will go to Sick Kids Hospital.
